Port of Everett receives first cement shipment since 2009

The Port of Everett Seaport in Washington state, USA has received its first cement shipment since 2009 – a sign that the US cement industry has picked up.
The shipment of 32 000 t of cement was received in August and was offloaded over a period of eight days by a vacuum and conveyor belt system. The cement is now stored at the port in a large dome with the capacity to hold 60 000 t of cement.
The cement belongs to Lehigh Hanson, a subsidiary of HeidelbergCement, which signed a 20-year lease with the Port of Everett in 2006 but was able to make little use of it during the economic downturn.
Executive Director John Mohr said, “While the construction activity in the region hasn’t reached pre-recession levels, we are encouraged by the return of shipments.”
Cement operations at the Port generate an estimated 35 jobs and a further 100 additional jobs, such as truck drivers, rail operators, tug operators and ship’s crew.
