  • New grinding facility at the Nobres plant will increase production capacity by 60%, to a total of 1.2 million tpy of cement.
  • Expansion in Nobres will also increase the site’s aglime production capacity by more than 20%, to 900 000 tpy.
  • Votorantim Cimentos will install a tire shredding plant in Cuiabá to support sustainable waste disposal and reduce CO2 emissions.
  • Votorantim Cimentos announce a R$330 million investment in the state of Mato Grosso, including expansions and the modernisation of its sites located in the towns of Cuiabá and Nobres. Construction financed by these investments will start in 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. In addition to maintaining the more than 700 current jobs at the company’s two plants in Mato Grosso, Votorantim Cimentos estimates that these construction projects will create more than 150 direct and indirect jobs in the state.

At the Nobres plant, a new cement mill will increase the site’s production capacity by 60%, from the current 750 000 tpy to 1.2 million tpy of cement. Votorantim Cimentos will also increase the aglime production capacity of this plant by more than 20%, from the current 740 000 tpy to 900 000 tpy of this important agricultural product. The expansion and modernisation in Nobres also include a new product storage warehouse and improvements to its logistics infrastructure.

At the Cuiabá site, through Verdera (Votorantim Cimentos’ business unit dedicated to sustainable waste management and disposal), Votorantim Cimentos will invest in modernisation and in a used tire shredding facility. After shredding, these tires are sent to be co-processed in the company’s cement production kilns. Co-processing is a technology used worldwide to properly dispose of various types of waste, which are transformed into energy for the cement industry, replacing petroleum coke, a fossil fuel, and reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases, such as CO2. The collected and shredded tires are 100% reused. In addition to being a safe and sustainable solution, co-processing prevents improper disposal of tires in the environment or in landfills.

“These investments strengthen our presence in Mato Grosso and demonstrate our long-term partnership with the state. We already have an established operation in the Central-West region that can grow even further. These expansions and modernisations will increase our competitiveness and our production and storage capacity, and improve our efficiency to better serve our customers and the consumer market, while also reducing CO2 emissions. In this way, we contribute to the economic, social, and environmental development of the state and the entire region,” said Osvaldo Ayres Filho, global CEO of Votorantim Cimentos.

Votorantim Cimentos’ expansions in the state of Mato Grosso are part of a comprehensive investment programme by the company in Brazil, focused on modernisation, capacity growth, competitiveness and decarbonisation. Announced in early 2024, the plan includes R$5 billion in investments to be deployed by 2028.

With a pioneering history in the cement industry in Mato Grosso, the Votorantim Cimentos plant in Nobres was inaugurated in 1991. In addition to producing Itaú cement, the Nobres site also supports the company’s strategy for the Brazilian agribusiness sector, manufacturing products from Viter, Votorantim Cimentos’ agricultural solutions brand.

The Cuiabá cement plant was inaugurated by Votorantim Cimentos in 2013 to meet the growing demand of the construction sector in the region. In 2019, Votorantim Cimentos started operating a Votomassa plant integrated with this site, located in the capital of the state of Mato Grosso. The plant produces adhesive mortars for different types of indoor and outdoor applications on floors and walls, ceramics, porcelain tiles and other materials.
