Lafarge North America is making significant contributions to building more durable cities. One example of this is the new University Medical Centre of New Orleans, to which Lafarge is contributing high performance concrete containing NewCem slag cement and fly ash to meet the high-strength, resiliency and sustainability goals of the University’s project.

Following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Southeast Louisiana has worked to create a stronger, more resilient built environment. The 2.3 million ft2 UMC complex, which opened in August, has been designed to withstand a variety of natural disasters, and restores much-needed healthcare services to the local community and serves as a key centre for academic training and research.

For the project, Lafarge provided high-performance concrete containing two different blended concrete mix designs that incorporated NewCem slag cement and fly ash. Based on research, Lafarge suggested and supplied 34 000 cubic yards of a high performance concrete containing a 50% Portland Type I/II-50% NewCem® slag cement blend for the United States Press Release PAGE 2/2 foundation slabs that would give long-term durability, high sulfate resistance and a compressive strength of 7000 psi. The UMC complex’s resilient and eco-friendly design also required 75 000 cubic yards of high-performance concrete containing a 20% fly ash-80% Portland Type I/II blended cement mix that Lafarge produced and supplied for the beams, columns, elevated floors and other structural applications.
