Groundbreaking ceremony for carbon capture plant in Texas

World Cement,

Skyonic Corporation held a groundbreaking ceremony on 30 September for the Capitol SkyMine plant at Capitol Aggregates’ San Antonio site in Texas, USA.

The carbon capture plant, which is expected to become fully operational in 2014, will capture 300 000 tpa of CO2, in addition to selectively capturing acid gases and heavy metals from the site’s flue gas.

The sale of green byproducts, such as sodium bicarbonate, HCl and bleach, which will be developed by mineralising the captured pollutants, will help the plant to become profitable within three years.

This commercial-scale plant is the first of its kind in the US. It follows on from a demonstration plant operated by Skyonic at the same site since 2010. Toyo-Thai and Ford, Bacon & Davis have been contracted to provide EPC services on the project, while San Antonio’s CCC Group acts as general contractor and offer construction services.

“The beginning of construction is a major milestone on the road to commercialisation,” commented Greg Hale, President of Capitol Aggregates. “When Skyonic began operating its demonstration plant at Capitol Aggregates several years ago, we were excited about the prospect of producing more sustainable cement. Now that the project has reached a commercial-scale, we couldn’t be happier to have such a revolutionary process at our cement factory.”

“Industrial manufacturing is a cornerstone of the global economy and we’re doing our part to making the process more lucrative for industries and cleaner for the environment,” added Joe Jones, founder and CEO of Skyonic. “Our partners and investors have played an important role in getting to this commercialisation stage, and we’re all looking forward to starting construction and making our first plant a standout success.”
