Lafarge North America’s Presque Isle Quarry has been recognised for its efforts towards creating a healthier lifestyle for its staff and the local community. On 12 February, the Quarry was awarded the 2015 Alpena Regional Medical Center’s Health Leadership Award, which is presented annually by the centre’s development council to an area business.
"It was a humbling experience to be recognised by our community for our ambition and efforts in promoting wellness," said Allan Idalski, Presque Isle Quarry manager. "Achieving the utmost health and wellness for our employees is something every Lafarge plant strives for."
The Quarry promoted several wellness initiatives throughout 2014, and organised a 5 km quarry run last August to raise money for the Alpena Regional Medical Center, raising US$35 000. The Presque Isle Quarry is already working on its second annual 5K later this year.
Over the past 12 months, the Presque Isle Quarry also provided its employees with a variety of other opportunities to develop healthy lifestyles and to promote wellness, including access to a smoke-free workplace, employee assistance programme (EAP), first aid/CPR training, flu shots, lifestyle screenings, nutrition programmes, smoking cessation programmes, weight loss programmes and other health and safety programmes.
