Cemex appeal BLM decision to cancel contracts

Cemex has appealed the Bureau of Land Management’s decision to cancel its mining contracts in Soledad Canyon.
The BLM officially notified Cemex that its Soledad Canyon mining contracts, held for more than 20 years but never acted on, had been cancelled.
Cemex accused the BLM of an “improper decision” and “arbitrary actions,” noting the company has devoted “considerable time” and money working with stakeholders over the past several years for a resolution to the dispute between the mining firm and the community opposed to the mine.
Cemex had held two contracts, originally awarded in 1990, to extract 56 million t of sand and gravel from hundreds of acres in Soledad Canyon northeast of Canyon Country.
The city of Santa Clarita and Cemex fought over the deal for years, with city officials saying the mine would pollute Santa Clarita Valley air, block Highway 14 with traffic and compromise the quality of life in the valley.
