The summer is drawing to a close. Here in the UK, the roads are heaving with traffic once more as kids return to school; after the warmest spring and summer on record, the weather has taken a decidedly autumnal turn (read: rain and lots of it); and the seasonal flurry of out-of-office emails received by those still working is gradually dissipating as people return from holiday.

Whilst many were taking a well-deserved break, the cement industry continued working apace. In fact, it was actually quite a busy summer. Back in June, Heidelberg Materials started operations at its Brevik CCS plant, marking a major milestone for the industry by demonstrating the viability of carbon capture with the world’s first industrial-scale CCS facility at a cement plant. In that same month, Holcim completed the spin-off of its North American operations under the name ‘Amrize’, with the aim of sharpening strategic and operational focus for the two independently listed companies on either side of the Atlantic.
In the US, the newly monikered ACA (formerly PCA) released a report explaining how the seemingly insatiable demand from ‘Big Tech’ for ever more AI compute power and data centres was going to drive demand for an additional 1 million t of cement by 2028. In other news from the States, Ecocem announced that it had received ASTM C1157 certification for its low-carbon cement technology (ACT), which enables more efficient use of SCMs and significantly lower clinker levels. And over in India, JK Cement announced it had begun the production and dispatch of portland limestone cement (LC-3) in Rajasthan state. With an emissions profile up to 40% lower than OPC, the LC-3 produced here will be used for infrastructure projects across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and other parts of India.
