On this month's cover: FLSmidth was the main equipment supplier for the Salt River Materials Group’s modernisation of its Phoenix Cement facility in Clarkdale, Arizona. This plant features energy-efficient roller mills for grinding coal, raw meal and cement. The cement grinding mill, the first cement VRM installed in the US, operates with 30% better power efficiency than existing ball mills. The pyroprocessing system includes the latest ROTAX-2 kiln design with friction drive, a highly-efficient SF Cross-Bar cooler, and the latest low NOx and low CO ILC preheater/calciner. In addition, the plant has a complete control system by FLSmidth Automation and a Ventomatic cement packing and palletising system. This facility has proven to be one of the most energy-efficient plants in the US, with skilled Phoenix Cement employees utilising equipment based on proven, superior technology and design provided by FLSmidth.

On this month's cover: COMFLEX, KHD´s new grinding system, is a modular, compact and multi-talented grinding solution for the cement and minerals industries. COMFLEX is used for finish and semi-finish grinding of raw materials, cement and slag. This new grinding system combines well-proven KHD technologies: roller press with swing frame for easy and fast roller change and a tailor-made separating unit, taking care of separating, drying and conveying. The system enables production rates of more than 1000 tph raw meal and 600 tph cement to fit large kilns with single grinding units. COMFLEX features high flexibility for a wide range of applications and product qualities, lowest energy demand and favourable particle size distributions. Contrary to other grinding systems, with COMFLEX at least 50% of the grinding capacity is available during maintenance of grinding tools.
