Danish cement and mineral research project receives funding grant

World Cement,

A joint research project between FLSmidth A/S, Hempel A/S and the Chemical Engineering Department at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has received a DKK31 million grant from the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation. The project will enhance Danish mineral and cement production technology and help FLSmidth to maintain its role in the provision of such technology to the international cement industry.

The project will largely be based on PhD and postdoctoral research within FLSmidth and Hempel, as well as at DTU, thereby joining technological development and the training.

Hempel recently expanded into advanced protective coating systems for industrial applications and this expertise will be employed to develop new types of surface treatment that could lead to efficiency improvements at cement plants and in mineral processing.

“FLSmidth strives for global leadership in the mineral industry, and this requires a technological edge, which the new research platform will help to strengthen. We are pleased that the grant given by the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation contributes to advancing knowledge about e.g. flotation processes, chemical extraction and electrolysis. This will enhance Denmark's competitive standing in a rapidly expanding sector,” said FLSmidth CEO, Thomas Schulz.

“DTU Chemical Engineering is dedicated to continuous enhancement of Danish industry's competitive edge by developing new knowledge. With this new joint venture we look forward to creating synergy among companies with whom we have worked together on individual projects for many years,” added Professor and Head of DTU Chemical Engineering, Kim Dam-Johansen.
