Tomorrow’s Value Rating puts Holcim at the top for sustainability

World Cement,
Holcim has been ranked as sustainability leader in the new analysis of the Construction and Materials sector from DNV GL – Business Assurance. The Tomorrow’s Value Rating 2014 placed AzkoNobel and China Steel Corporation in joint second place, with Ferrovial and BASF closely behind.
The report shows that the highest performing companies, such as cement and building materials company Holcim, distinguish themselves by clearly stating their commitments to tackling social and environmental challenges and following through with actions to support these commitments.
The top companies have put innovative products with strong sustainability credentials at the core of their growth strategy, says the TVR; yet there remains a huge opportunity for others in the sector to define the role they want to play in finding solutions to pressing global challenges.
Ivaylo Dimov, Construction and Materials, lead on the TVR 2014, explains: “Population growth, rapid urbanisation, intensifying wealth disparity, changing climate and unsustainable use of natural resources, are some of the mega-trends that the construction and materials sector already faces. Despite the unquestionable sense of urgency that some of these challenges create, very few of the rated companies in this year’s TVR have clearly defined the role they want to play in finding solutions to these challenges and thus future-proof their company’s business growth and success. While these companies have different operating models and geographical coverage, they all face a herculean challenge to maintain full transparency and control over the risks associated with such a complex supply chain.”
The TVR challenges companies based on strategy, whether there are sufficient supporting structures in place, and delves into how the companies have actually been performing on the most critical issues and therefore leading the charge towards truly sustainable business. Most importantly, the TVR looks at what still needs to be done to realise a safe and sustainable future for all.
Jon Woodhead, Business Development Manager, DNV GL - Business Assurance, says: “If we are to succeed in tackling global sustainability challenges, from climate change to income disparity, we need to see closer cross-sector collaboration. Business leaders should fundamentally rethink their approach to long-term strategic planning, and how they adapt their products and services to reflect socio-economic upheavals.”
