Rohrdorfer automates laboratory processes at Gmunden Cement Plant

Published by , Editorial Assistant
World Cement,

At the Rohrdorfer cement plant in Gmunden, the product testing process in the laboratory has been extensively automated and a new crossbelt analyser has been installed. Both innovations have taken cement production in Gmunden to a new level.?

At the beginning of 2025, following well-planned and implemented renovation measures, an automated laboratory was put into operation. Operating 24/7, samples of raw meal, clinker, cement, and much more are taken every ten minutes. In the next step, the samples are prepared for further analysis and then analysed. The data flows into the equally new laboratory information management system, which centrally consolidates all laboratory data from Gmunden and Rohrdorf. This makes cross-plant comparisons and potential for improvement faster and easier to identify.

Another highlight is the crossbelt analyser, which determines the composition of the material before it enters the kiln, clinker, and cement. This allows fine adjustments to leveling agents, such as gypsum, to be made in a timely manner. This is far more advantageous than first sampling the finished cement in the silo.

The introduction of this state-of-the-art laboratory automation went absolutely smoothly thanks to the teamwork of the Gmunden laboratory employees.
