Spain’s regional markets

Cement consumption in Andalucía came in at 875 231 t in 1H14 according to the region’s cement association. This is approximately 1% (9281 t) less than in 1H13. For Andalucía’s cement sector, this is the worst performance for the period in the last 50 years. The decline has been attributed to low infrastructure investment, which has stalled construction activity and had a knock on effect on the cement sector. On the bright side, cement and clinker exports increased by 12.8% y/y to reach 1.156 million t.

In Cataluña, cement consumption declined by 15.8% y/y to 661 194 t. However, production grew by 13.2% y/y to 1.289 million t in January – June 2014 as exports of cement and clinker improved by 102.5% y/y. The Port of Barcelona recorded a 7% y/y rise in the total volume of cargo handled in 1H14, with cement and clinker up 26% y/y.

In Spain as a whole, Oficemen has reported a 3% y/y drop in domestic consumption in the first six months of the year, although export volumes were up 35% y/y.
