Lafarge achieves Carbon Trust Standard recertification

Leicestershire-based Lafarge Aggregates & Concrete UK has achieved recertification of the Carbon Trust Standard, after it was first certified in 2010. Only a third of companies have regained the Standard, a carbon award that requires firms to measure and reduce their carbon emissions.

Lafarge Aggregates & Concrete has reduced its emissions by 16% in the last five years, as well as implementing further carbon reduction initiatives in the two years since its initial certification. These measures included increasing efficiency through improved maintenance programmes; installing timers on office heaters; introducing ‘soft starts’ on crushers and conveyors; holding workshops to encourage staff to introduce energy saving schemes at their sites; installing electricity metres that monitor usage every 30 minutes; as well as turning to sheep grazing rather than the usual grass cutting process at the Dowlow site.

The certification covers all of Lafarge Aggregates & Concrete UK’s quarries, ready-mix and asphalt plants, depots and offices.

Speaking of the Standard recertification, CRC and Energy Performance Advisor Helen Atkins said: “Both the initial achievement and now the recertification has taken a lot of hard work and effort, especially from staff on the ground. I'm really proud of our all our teams and the way people have got on board with the carbon reduction message. Raising awareness and encouraging different behaviours has been key to this continued success”.
