Increased cement demand leads to new jobs at Hanson Cement

According to local press reports, the UK’s Hanson Cement, based in the Ribble Valley near Clitheroe, is looking to create new jobs due to a rise in the demand for building materials as a result of increased construction activity in the UK. Due to the predicted increase in the cement company’s production output, it is investing in new tipper, mixer and articulated trucks and is consequently in need of new truck drivers.

The Communications Manager at Hanson Cement, David Weeks, told local press that sales volumes of materials such as aggregates, asphalt and ready mixed concrete had risen rapidly in the past few months. He commented that the construction industry seems to be turning a corner after an extended period of depression in the market.

After years of decline for the UK construction industry following the economic crisis, the market is currently on the up due to an increase in building and development projects, predominantly in the private housing sector.

The Mineral Products Association’s (MPA) 3Q13 results showed that sales volumes of aggregates, asphalts and ready mixed concrete experienced significant growth in the quarter. Sales growth stood at +9% for crushed rock, sand and gravel, +10% for ready mixed concrete and +11% for asphalt compared with 3Q12.
