Italcementi invests €150 in plant refurbishment project

World Cement,

Italcementi is to refurbish its Rezzato plant as part of its 2009 “Patto per l’Ambiente” agreement with the Italian Ministry of the Environment, which involves revamping the country’s industrial network. The €150 million project will involve installing new technology and up-to-date processes at the plant, which was constructed in 1964, in order to make it the most efficient and eco-friendly in Europe. A new clinker production line will replace two current production sites. The revamp will result in a 23% reduction in production costs, a 75% drop in emissions, as well as lowering energy consumption by 23%. Work will start next month, with operations forecast to begin by the end of 2014.

Carlo Pesenti, Italcementi CEO, commented that, “Significant environmental and economic benefits will be achieved thanks to the revamping of the plant. Along with Calusco d’Adda and Matera plants, the new revamped plant will be one of our cutting-edge cement plants in Italy. The Group is also currently investing in India and Bulgaria but this commitment in Italy is a further demonstration of our local roots and our trust in the future of our country despite the current difficult economic scenario. I wish to thank Rezzato and Mazzano communities for their support to this project. This project will certainly improve the sustainability of the area”.
