DNV GL to help UK government achieve low carbon economy target

World Cement,

DNV GL and its project partner Parsons Brinckerhoff are carrying out a series of investigative workshops across eight industry sectors as part of a UK government project to develop Industrial Decarbonisation Roadmaps to support the UK’s 2050 emissions decarbonisation goals.

The Climate Change Act established a legally binding target to reduce the UK’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 80% below base year by 2050. The Department of Energy and Climate Change’s (DECC) 2011 Carbon Plan outlined how the UK would achieve decarbonisation to make the transition to a low-carbon economy while trying to maintain energy security and minimise negative economic impacts and costs to consumers.

Working as part of a project consortium with Parsons Brinckerhoff, DNV GL has been appointed by DECC and the Department of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) to explore the technical options and breakthrough technologies needed for this transition, as well as the social and business barriers and enablers to achieving the reduction targets.

The project focuses on eight energy intensive sectors that together represent around 70% of industrial emissions in the UK: cement, iron and steel, pulp and paper, oil refining, glass, ceramics, chemicals and food/beverage.

The workshops, attended by senior executives and sector experts, are discussing future scenarios for these sectors, helping inform a set of high level actions to be undertaken by industry, government and other stakeholders by 2050.

“Many of the barriers we are identifying through this project will present a considerable challenge, both in terms of technology and behaviour,” said Tracy Oates, Principal Consultant at DNV GL – Business Assurance. “The output from the project will identify these changes and crucially allow the UK government to recognise and support these industry sectors in realising the goal of transitioning the UK towards a low carbon economy.”
