Cemex Latvia awards SRF contract to SITA UK

World Cement,

SITA UK, a recycling and resource management company, has been awarded a 3-year contract to supply 180 000 t of solid recovered fuel (SRF) to Cemex Latvia. The SRF will replace fossil fuels at Cemex’s Broceni cement plant in southern Latvia.

CEO of Cemex Latvia, Enrique Garcia, said of the new partnership: “The use of alternative fuels (AF) is an integral part of our sustainable development strategy, and in Cemex Latvia we have been progressing very fast during the last couple of years in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. Currently, more than half of our calorific consumption in the kiln comes from AF, and this agreement is a relevant step that will help us achieve our goals. We are looking forward to a very successful cooperation with SITA UK.”

The fuel will be produced from residual commercial waste at SITA’s new £6 million facility in Kent, UK. The 50 tph processing facility, which was commissioned in August, is located at Ridham Docks so that material can be loaded directly onto ships from the site. SITA UK has a 1-year transfrontier shipment permit to export the SRF to Latvia.
