UK concrete block shortage

Delays on construction sites are being caused by a shortage of concrete blocks in the UK.
The closure of coal-fired plants has reduced the amount of fresh pulverised fuel ash for block making.
British construction sites are being hit as production struggles to keep up with demand. Supply problems are the most acute with aircrete blocks as raw materials being used in their manufacture run dry.
Gradual closure of coal-fired plants for cleaner energy sources has reduced the amount of fresh pulverised fuel ash. Stockpiled ash is still available in huge quantities. But the older material does not have the same performance characteristics as fresh ash so manufacturers are having to adapt their production processes.
