Cementos Cosmos celebrates anniversary

Spain’s Cementos Cosmos de Toral de los Vados cement plant is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. To mark 90 years since its inauguration in 1924, the company has organised a number of activities. These kicked off with a series of drawing, painting and photography competitions. The plant, which forms part of Brazil’s Votorantim Group, has also launched a website for the occasion: www.90aniversariocosmos.com (Spanish language). The Cosmos de Toral de los Vados plant has a cement production capacity of 1.5 million t and provides 150 direct jobs.

Earlier this year, Cementos Cosmos also announced that it had celebrated World Tree Day (Día Mundial del Árbol) for the second year in a row. The cement manufacturer teamed up with students from Colegio de Toral de los Vados to plant around 200 trees, such as hazel, cherry and walnut trees.

Spanish cement consumption

The latest figures from Oficemen indicate that cement consumption fell by 2.2% y/y to more than 2.47 million t in 1Q14. This represents a slowdown in decline, which has been attributed to the positive performance in March 2014 when compared to March 2013. March of last year was not only one of the wettest in Spanish history, but Semana Santa (Easter Week) also fell during the month, both of which hampered cement consumption. In March of this year, the weather was more favourable and national holidays such as Easter did not take place during the month.

Nevertheless, accumulated sales for the last 12 months dropped by 12.9% and Oficemen stands by its forecast that total sales in 2014 will decrease by 7 – 8%.
