Cataluña: double-digit improvement in local cement consumption
According to Ciment Català, cement consumption increased by 19.9% y/y to 130 316 t in Cataluña in April 2015. Consumption levels for the first four months of 2015 also showed improvement on the same period last year, rising by 13.8% to 485 434 t.
These figures are in line with cement consumption growth in Spain as a whole. Statistics recently released by Oficemen reveal that domestic consumption rose by 13.3% y/y in April 2015 and by 9.7% y/y in January – April 2015.
Although domestic consumption has increased when compared to low levels in 2014, exports continue to be a key lifeline for the cement industry in Cataluña. Cement and clinker exports were up 30.2% y/y to 275 285 t in April 2015. This is more than double domestic consumption volumes.
