World Cement,

Tarmac’s Tunstead site in Buxton has donated to Buxton Community School’s educational project to provide students with the unique experience of visiting the Space Centre in Korolov, Russia.

Twenty Year 8 – Year 13 pupil have been selected to visit Russia, where they will take lessons with Cosmonauts, explore the space centre and learn about the workings of the space industry. The visit forms part of the school’s STEM studies for students who hope to enter these fields of research and related work after they leave school.

Phil Shimwell, assistant quarry, manager at Tunstead, attended the school to present the cheque. He said: “We’re delighted to be supporting a STEM project which promises so many educational benefits, and are pleased to help the students start their fundraising efforts for what will be a very worthwhile trip. It is extremely rewarding to see how much of a difference the donation can make for the children at the school.”

Michael Walker, teacher at Buxton Community School, said: “The students are very excited about this opportunity to visit the Russian Space Centre, it really is a one off chance and we expect it to inspire them to become the next generation of scientists, engineers and astronauts. We are very grateful for the donation from Tarmac, which gives them a great start to their fundraising efforts!”
