Cement consumption

According to Oficemen, cement consumption came in at 773 293 t in February 2013, 9.8% or 84 2999 t lower than in February 2013. In January – February 2014, consumption dropped by 11.8% y/y, higher than the 8% y/y decline previously predicted. However, Oficemen believes that consumption trends throughout 2014 will mean that the yearly consumption level will be in line with its estimates.

Waste utilisation in Andalucía

On 26 February 2014, a meeting was held between Javier González de Lara, President of the Confederation of Andalucían Business Owners (CEA), and Feliciano González, President of Flacema and The Association of Cement Producers in Andalucía (AFCA), as well as CEO of Holcim Spain. During the meeting Javier González de Lara expressed his support for cement plants in the region to generate energy from waste. In addition to the environmental advantages, this would also help the industry to increase its competitiveness. Consumption of cement in Andalucía has fallen by over 80% since 2008.

New appointments

Jaime Santoalla has been announced as Director of Cementos Cosmos’ plant in Toral de los Vados. He succeeds Luis Arroyo who held the position for 29 years.

Lafarge has named José Luis Coleto as the new Director of its cement plant in Montcada I Reixac, Barelona. His previous role was that of Lafarge Spain’s Sales and Logistics Director for cement, concrete and construction materials. He replaces Vicente Pedro, who has joined Lafarge Brazil as Director of Industrial Operations.
