HeidelbergCement has released its 2011/2012 Sustainability Report

World Cement,

HeidelbergCement has released its 2011/2012 Sustainability Report, “Foundations”. The report looks at sustainability management – both accomplishments thus far and future aims – in addition to environmental measures and social responsibility.

“Sustainable business practices are a fundamental condition as well as an integral component of our business activities, and therefore central to the activities and decisions of our management teams on the ground. The important thing is to minimise the impact of our operations on the local environment and populations, and to utilise our core competencies in a way that contributes to the society at large and generates economic opportunities,” said Dr Scheifele, CEO of HeidelbergCement AG. “Presenting our sustainability achievements and aims in a report like this is an essential part of making our business transparent and understandable to our stakeholders.”

The report also covers occupational health and safety. “In addition to environmental protection, the health and safety of our employees is another focus of the HeidelbergCement sustainability programme. The figures prove the effectiveness of our expanded prevention measures and information campaigns. Still, workplace safety remains one of our top priorities, which is why we will continue to raise awareness among management and employees with respect to their responsibility for workplace health and safety,” added Dr Scheifele.

Highlights from “Foundations” include:

  • Specific net CO2 emissions have been reduced to 607.5 kg/t of cement. This is a reduction of 21% when compared to 1990 levels.
  • In 2012, alternative fuel use increased to 21.7% of total energy consumption.
  • An interview with Dr Jane Goodall, UN Messenger of Peace, who presented HeidelbergCement’s Quarry Life Award.
  • Specific case studies, such as Safety Week, during which the Group’s Canadian and US employees focused on health and safety at home and in the workplace. Some 250 plants held a Family Safety Day to further raise awareness of the issue.
  • Details of the company’s involvement with BirdLife International.
  • Information about HeidelbergCement Technology Center’s work in developing new and innovative techniques for reducing CO2 emissions.
