Cemex delivers Vertua concrete made from recycled aggregates for hospital

The future Caen University Hospital, scheduled to open in 2027, has been designed to optimally meet patient needs. Its innovative architectural layout will allow departments to be grouped around platforms, facilitating the care pathway.

The buildings are distinguished by their exceptional hotel-like quality, with a majority of single rooms, carefully designed green outdoor spaces, and direct access to natural light in all areas. Every detail has been carefully considered to provide a warm, soothing, and human-centred environment.

Meeting tomorrow's health challenges

Five buildings of 3 to 6 stories will span a surface area of ??over 110 000 m2, ensuring continuity of hospitalisation capacity. This new complex will increase the number of outpatient beds and will be equipped with a modern and innovative imaging platform as well as 37 new operating rooms, ensuring optimal patient care.

Eco-responsible construction

The construction site is part of an HQE certification process aimed at minimising the environmental impact of buildings, preserving natural resources, and providing a healthy and comfortable indoor environment for users. This eco-responsible approach extends to the entire project, incorporating more sustainable practices such as optimised waste management, promoting soft mobility, improving energy efficiency through the use of renewable energy, greening roofs, and the use of lower-carbon materials.

35 000 m3 of concrete made from recycled aggregates

This colossal project is being carried out by a consortium led by Vinci. The structural work, which has been completed in April 2025, involved five cranes and required a total volume of nearly 70 000 m3 of concrete distributed between Cemex and Heidelberg Materials. In total, nearly 35 000 m3 of Vertua® concrete incorporating recycled aggregates was delivered by Cemex from the Caen Blainville production facility. Of this concrete, 12 600 m3 is also lower-carbon concrete and 15,600 m³ is hyperfluid concrete. 3350 t of recycled aggregates from the Ecominéro CRB* platform in Blainville, located near our production unit, were incorporated into the various concrete formulas.

The Cemex teams are proud to be involved in this exceptional project, embodying the vision of the university hospital of tomorrow, serving local communities and centred on people and the environment.

Florence Boutmy, Director Materials France North, commented: “Cemex is proud to participate in the construction of the brand new Caen University Hospital, which will enable an increased capacity for patient care. This project exemplifies how more sustainable solutions, such as our Vertua lower-carbon concrete with recycled aggregates, can be utilised to develop infrastructure that will meet the needs of local communities for years to come.”

Cemex R&D, Innovation and Business Development projects are part of the global R&D collaboration network, headed by CEMEX Research Centers, based in Switzerland.
