CEMEX Ventures announces new ESG policy for sustainable investing

Published by , Senior Editor
World Cement,

CEMEX Ventures, CEMEX's open innovation and Corporate Venture Capital unit, presents its Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policy to adhere to the best sustainable industry practices and contribute to a more sustainable and robust portfolio of companies and partnerships that will strengthen its investment model and improve its risk prevention.

CEMEX Ventures recognises its responsibility to society and the construction industry, which is why it is aligning its actions to contribute to CEMEX’s United Nations priorities and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Under its new comprehensive policy, CEMEX Ventures pledges to integrate sustainable deal sourcing and screenings, due diligence evaluations, and ESG reporting and monitoring into its pre- and post-investment activities since there is a positive link between ESG performance and financial performance or value creation.

The Corporate Venture Capital is practicing responsible investing by rejecting solutions from controversial industries, carrying out positive screening, and analysing new startups according to different purviews, such as environmental and climate action compliance, diversity, community impact, health and safety regulations, and human resources, to name a few.

To ensure accountability, CEMEX Ventures’ ESG and Investment Committee is responsible for the analysis of each partner or opportunity from the time of initial investment, as well as at the time of subsequent follow-on investment. This committee is established to oversee the correct application of all SRI principles and will undergo continual training, working closely with other teams within the leading building materials multinational (e.g., Sustainability, Investor Relations, Social Impact) to guarantee compliance and excellence.

CEMEX Ventures extends its SRI priorities to its portfolio companies through ESG trainings and accountability mechanisms, and engages with external organisations to audit its ESG policy and ensure best practices. By becoming signatories of the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI), the Corporate Venture Capital of CEMEX establishes its commitment to foster the construction revolution through sustainable and responsible investment activity.
