Cement consumption declines on a national and regional level in Spain

Oficemen has revealed that cement consumption in Spain fell by 21.5% y/y from more than 1.1 million t in January 2012 to 892 783 in January 2013. This figure is 80% lower than the consumption levels recorded in January 2007. According to Oficemen Director General, Aniceto Zaragoza, the fall in consumption levels are in line with earlier predictions, with expectations for improvement this year remaining low. Production also dropped by 30.7% y/y to 948 443 t last month.

In Andalucía, consumption levels remained bleak as the regional cement sector continued to feel the effects of low construction activity and decreasing public investment in infrastructure. Cement consumption declined by 28.6% y/y in January 2013, coming in at 137 329 t. A similar scenario also occurred in Catalonia, where consumption dropped by around 20.1% y/y to just over 140 000 t.
