Government and private sector leaders announced commitments and partnerships on 8 December during one of the Lima-Paris Action Agenda's (LPAA) thematic days at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change's (UNFCCC) 2015 Paris Climate Conference (COP21) to achieve a major increase in investments for research and development in low-carbon technologies and ways to speed up their diffusion in developing countries.

Building on this initiative, the thematic day focusing on innovation has gathered high-level speakers such as:

  • Ernest Moniz, US Secretary of Energy.
  • Fatih Birol, Executive Director of International Energy Agency.
  • Zhenya Liu, Chairman of State Grid Corporation of China.
  • Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, France.
  • Elham Mahmoud Ahmed Ibrahim, Commissioner Infrastructure and Energy of African Union.

Jorge Mario Velázquez, President of Cementos Argos, represented the CSI and spoke for the cement industry in this crucial meeting. "For us it is an important step of a journey initiated years ago, focusing on being each day more sustainable." said Velázque. "Through our practices we have set clear targets for reducing CO2 at the same time participating in initiatives such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) and the Cement Sustainability Initiative."

Today, Cementos Argos produces 29% less CO2 per t of cement than 10 years ago, "We achieved these goals investing in better technology, using alternative fuels, cleaner materials and innovative products. These are progress achieved that we want to show in Paris." Cementos Argos is also one of the 17 signatories supporting the WBCSD's Low Carbon Technology Partnership initiative (LCTPi) Cement.
