Cemex cement plants in Germany achieve alternative fuels milestone

Cemex’s cement plants in Germany achieved an alternative fuels substitution rate of 82.6% in April. This is the first country in which Cemex operates to have reached this milestone. In addition, the Kollenbach cement plant in Beckum managed to attain an average substitution rate of 90.9% during the month.

In 2012, Cemex achieved a substitution rate of 27.1% worldwide, enabling it to cut its use of coal by 2.3 million t and avoiding the emission of 1.8 million t of CO₂.

“Beyond significantly reducing fuel costs, our expanding use of alternative fuels fosters the sustainable management of our earth’s natural resources,” said Eric Wittman, President of Cemex in Germany. “In April, our Kollenbach plant replaced 12 000 t of coal with refuse-derived fuel, bone meal and old tyres. Indeed, the plant’s daily substitution rate of more than 94% encourages us to set the bar even higher.”
