The Ferzikovo Project – Part 1

World Cement,

Introduction

Mid-2014 saw the official opening of LafargeHolcim’s newest cement plant in Ferzikovo, in the Kaluga Region of the Russian Federation. Construction of the state-of-the-art plant started in 2011, with the purpose to create an innovative enterprise to provide clients with modern products and services, as well as to become one of the leaders in health, safety and environmental management protection policy. The kiln is designed for a highly efficient dry production method, with smart dust reduction and an alternative fuel workshop.

The Ferzikovo plant is the largest investment project that Lafarge, part of the LafargeHolcim Group, is running in the Russian market. With a well-balanced presence in 90 countries and a focus on cement, aggregates and concrete, LafargeHolcim is a world leader in the building materials industry. LafargeHolcim’s R&D serves everyone, from the individual homebuilder to the largest and most complex project, with a wide range of value-added products, innovative services and comprehensive building solutions. The company manages four cement plants in Russia – in Voskresensk, Kolomna, Ferzikovo and Volsk – and three aggregates quarries in the Republic of Karelia and the Tula Region.

A well-timed plant

With its favourable business climate, balanced economy, and significant scientific and industrial potential, the Kaluga Region is attractive to foreign investors. Many international companies are active in this region, supported by the local government. The development of infrastructure and housing construction generates 10% growth per year in cement consumption in the area. The Ferzikovo plant is the first cement plant in the region.

At the foundation-stone laying ceremony of the plant in November 2011, Mr. Anatoly Artamonov, Governor of the Kaluga Region, said: “This will be the first cement production in our region, which is of crucial importance to us. We are witnessing an industrial, home and road construction boom in our region. This all implies high cement consumption. That is why this plant is very well-timed.”

The plant will provide an increase of 2 million tpy of cement, or 5000 tpd of clinker, also meeting the cement requirements of the growing construction market in Moscow, located 180 km away, and in neighbouring areas.
