Rohrdorfer build new clinker cooler chimney at Gmunden Cement Plant

In order to be able to operate the kiln system in the Rohrdorfer cement plant at the Gmunden site more stably and thus more energy efficiently, a new clinker cooler chimney will be built next year.

The chimney will reduce the outlet temperature of the clinker and thus enable more effective cooling, which leads to direct energy savings. Rohrdorfer Zement GmbH has had approval for the new plant since the beginning of November 2024. Construction work is scheduled to start in mid-January 2025 and is expected to be completed in March.

The new clinker cooler chimney is designed to reliably remove the heated air that is created when the clinker cools. Since it is purely cooling air, no harmful emissions are produced during this process. This heated, pure air is completely dust-free by a filter system before it escapes from the clinker cooler chimney.

"With the installation of the new clinker cooler chimney and the resulting energy savings, just over three kg of CO2 per t of clinker can be saved," says Antonio Marjanovic, project manager of the construction project at Rohrdorfer Zement GmbH. "Based on our annual production volume, that's up to 1500 t of CO2 per year - that's equivalent to the emissions from a round trip flight from Vienna to New York."

The clinker cooling chimney is being built by the Upper Austrian company Scheuch. The investment sum is around €500 000.
