Cemex contributes to French rail development

World Cement,
Cemex has contributed to the renovations and extensions of three urban rail systems in Marseille, Lyon and Saint-Etienne, France.
In Marseille, Cemex has provided 15 different formulas of high-strength, ready-mix concretes for the construction of a significant new underground metropolitan railway station. The station design required that all of the ready-mix concrete be the same colour, despite the fact that colour varies with each ready-mix formula. By adding slag to lighten the ready-mix concrete, adjusting the quantity for each formula, Cemex was able to meet both the mechanical and aesthetic requirements of the project.
Cemex also supplied a rail line in Lyon, providing ready-mix concrete to fill in the bed under 800 m of rails comprising the city’s tramline extension to serve the Grand Stade, a football stadium currently under construction at Decines-Charpieu. At various points on the route, particularly around the switches, classic metal reinforcement posed challenges. To combat these challenges, Cemex used ready-mix concrete with metal fibres added. These fibres were inserted directly into the mixer when the ready-mix concrete was made to provide specific fibre density and optimal implementation.
Cemex also helped with the repairs of one of the oldest tramlines in France, in the city of Saint-Etienne. Cemex coordinated with the site managers to deliver the ready-mix concrete for the track’s foundations as quickly as possible, as the tram needed to restart as quickly as possible.
