Construction newsbytes: Romania and Finland

Romania

According to the National Statistics Institute, the volume of construction work (in gross series) in Romania fell by 9.6% y/y in the first five months of 2014. Capital repairs works decreased by 20.1%, maintenance and current repairs works were down 11.4% and new construction works fell by 6.5%. In adjusted series (based on working days and seasonality) the volume of construction work decreased by 8.9% y/y during the reporting period.

In May 2014, the volume of construction work (in gross series) rose by some 17.4%, but decreased by 1.3% in adjusted series, compared to April 2014. Compared to May 2013, the volume of construction work (in gross series) fell by 10.7% during the month.

Finland

A new report by Timetric, ‘Construction in Finland - Key Trends and Opportunities to 2018’, has highlighted that, due to slow economic growth, the construction industry declined in 2013. According to Statistics Finland, construction companies' turnover declined by 1.9% compared to 2012, and the value add in the construction industry fell by 2.3% in 2013.

In 4Q13, the turnover of the construction industry declined by 1.5% compared to the same period in 2012. During the quarter, the turnover of specialised construction activities dropped by 2.2% and building construction decreased by 1.4%, against the same period a year earlier. However, during the reporting period the area covered under building permits reached 8.9 million m2, 13.3% more than in 4Q12.
