CITB launches new health and safety app for construction workers

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) has launched a new app to help small and medium sized construction businesses put together health and safety plans, following the introduction of new regulations. The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM) come into force on 6 April 2015 and mean that for the first time, all construction projects (including work for householders) will need a health and safety plan for the construction phase.

The free CDM Wizard app, developed with the support of the HSE, will help make sure all construction work is underpinned by good health, safety and welfare standards, which are practical and straightforward to implement. The app will first be available on Android, followed by iOS.

The Revd. Kevin Fear, CITB’s Strategic Lead for Health and Safety Strategy, said: “The new regulations mean that all construction work will need a construction phase plan. Whether it’s an extension or a new bathroom fit out. The HSE has developed a template for this, and we’re committed to making things simple for people onsite and our app makes completing the paperwork easy. If you’re a busy builder, you just enter the job details into the app and it will quickly tell you everything you need to know.”

Andy Owens, MOD Infrastructure H&S Advisor, said: “The CDM app installed quickly and I found it easy to use. I followed it through to the generation of the action plan, which I was able to view, save and forward to a different email address to print off. It all worked perfectly and does the job needed.”

This app is part of the help on offer by the CITB to help businesses understand and comply with the regulations. There are six Construction Industry Advisory Committee (CONIAC) guidance documents for clients, contractors, designers, principal contractors, principal designers and workers, all free to download here.
