UK: rise in number of construction firms taking on apprentices

World Cement,

The UK’s CITB has released the results of a survey into apprenticeships in the construction sector. The publication of the poll results coincides with National Apprenticeship Week (9 – 13 March 2015). According to the survey, which involved 1500 construction employers, there has been a 30% increase in the number of companies taking on apprentices. Some 26% of participant firms hired apprentices in 2014, an improvement on the 20% reported in 2013. Around 25% of firms said that they were likely to take on apprentices this year. Although this figure is slightly lower than in 2013 (27%), it is much higher than in 2011 (15%). The survey reveals that 75% of firms are either satisfied or very satisfied with their apprentices.

The results also indicate that, as a result of skills shortages, 23% of companies are turning down work and 20% have seen projects over-run.

“These figures reveal that as our industry returns to growth, more apprentices are being recruited and are making a real difference to businesses,” noted Gillian Econopouly, Head of Research at CITB.” However, with our recent forecast showing over 200 000 jobs to be created in construction over the next five years, many more firms need to take on apprentices so that our industry can deliver all of the exciting projects in the pipeline.”

“In National Apprenticeship Week we want talented young people to consider a rewarding career in construction – brilliant opportunities across the country are out there waiting for you.”
