Sculptor uses Lafarge Tarmac’s Snowcrete for Scottish exhibition

Lafarge Tarmac has earned its place in the visual arts after its Snowcrete product was chosen by a Scottish artist as the medium for a new series of exhibits. The product has been used by sculptor Emma Herman-Smith to produce a collection of casts for an exhibition created for North Light Arts, supported by the Year of Natural Scotland.

The exhibit, entitled ‘Walking a Line’, consists of 10 ft-sized casts of the Dunbar coastline and were created by the artist whilst on residency in the town. The work honours the life of the Dunbar born father of the modern conservationist movement, John Muir. Remarking on her choice of the Lafarge Tarmac product, Ms Herman-Smith commented: “Although it was the glorious range of colours within the rocks along the Dunbar coastline that first drew my eye, the brilliant whiteness of Snowcrete gives full attention to the texture and form of this important geology. As a consequence, the casts exhibit an almost ethereal quality. The fact that the Lafarge plant is located in this area played a pivotal role in my choice of casting material.”

The Dunbar plant in East Lothian is Scotland’s only cement plant. In summer 2013, the site celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Lafarge Tarmac’s Snowcrete is often regarded as a decorative cement used for architectural design to create attractive and durable white concrete, rendering and mortar. Unlike traditional Portland cement, which is typically grey, Snowcrete is bright white in appearance, due to the limestone in its composition.

Dunbar Plant Manager Nigel Blair commented: “Seeing Snowcrete used in the visual arts gave us a huge sense of pride and we were excited to see the final results. Emma has created powerful works of art that show the true diversity of our product – cement really can be both functional and beautiful.”

This is the second time that the artist has chosen to work with Snowcrete, having created a series called ‘Hives’ in 2008.
