Tarmac receives new fleet of rail wagons

With the arrival of a new fleet of state-of-the-art rail wagons, Tarmac has boosted its capability to deliver aggregates via rail from its Mountsorrel Quarry in Leicestershire.

Leased from European hire company Ermewa, the 53 hoppers and 48 boxes each have the capability to haul over 77 t of material, increasing train capacity by over 15%. The wagons are already in operation, enabling Tarmac to deliver product more efficiently to its wide network of terminals across the Midlands and the South East.

The state-of-the-art wagons are fitted with track friendly bogies, designed to reduce impact and wear, resulting in both reduced track access and maintenance expenses. The additional payload per train allows Tarmac to move more material with fewer trains.

Chris Swan, senior manager rail and shipping at Tarmac, said: “The new rail fleet operating from Mountsorrel enhances our capacity to meet customer requirements for high quality construction materials and underlines Tarmac’s commitment to support more efficient, sustainable transport and a lower carbon built environment.”

About 60% of the aggregates produced at Moutsorrel is supplied by rail through sidings at Barrow upon Soar, more than any other quarry in the region.
