Pilsen, a city located 90 km southwest of Prague, has been named European Capital of Culture 2015, with the opening of its New Theatre marking the start of the city’s theatrical season. The building is the only new theatre to have been built in the Czech Republic during the last 30 years. The new state-of-the-art building is a symbol of the 21st century.

The building consists of two separate, interconnected objects, with the exterior made using deep red Colorcrete concrete, supplied by TBG Plzen Transportbeton. The building’s support system consists of a monolithic spatial structure of reinforced concrete walls, slabs and columns.

To achieve the desired colour, the concrete required 35 kg per m3 of pigment concrete mix, which was specially formulated using Sika ColorFlo, Sika ViscoCrete and SikaFume. Following the architect’s specification, the concrete formulation was adapted to the corresponding colour shade. For the façade joint, the PU sealant Sika Hyflex-250 Façade, in a special red colour, was used, with Sika-Waterbars used in the basement.

The resulting façade of red cast architectural concrete is striking, and the theatre is a multifunctional building designed to host drama, musicals, ballet and opera.
