Global viewpoint: the cement markets in Central Asia

World Cement,

In total in 2013, Kazakhstan consumed around 8.2 million t of cement. Over the past four years the rate of growth in the market has been 12 – 15%, and this is continuing this year. Some 1.6 million t of that total was imported, but with the launch of HeidelbergCement’s 1 million tpa CaspiCement plant in the Mangistau region in western Kazakhstan last year, and the new 2 million tpa Kokshecement plant in the Akmola region, imports will cease and in fact the trend will be reversed, with the country actually exporting cement. Tajikistan produced about 385 000 t of cement in 2013, with the Yovon plant producing 75% of the overall volume of cement. The country’s annual requirements have sharply increased with the construction of the Roghun hydroelectric power plant, highways and other projects. The main news from Uzbekistan is that US$49.1 million will be invested in the modernisation and reconstruction of the existing facilities. Nine projects involving the upgrading and reconstruction of JSC Kyzlkumcement (Navoi), JSC Ahangarancement and JSC Bekabadcement (in Tashken) are planned. There are six cement plants in the country with a total installed capacity of 8 million t. The Olmaliq KMK plant began production earlier this year. It manufactures 760 000 t of Portland cement and 350 000 t of white cement.
