Dunbar cement plant in Scotland celebrates 50th anniversary

World Cement,

Scotland’s only cement plant recently celebrated its 50th birthday with a party for current and past employees, plant managers and members of the community councils. The Lafarge Tarmac Dunbar plant in East Lothian has helped to build the equivalent of 6.5 million houses since it was founded. Many of the staff have been with the plant for much of its life, including three employees who were awarded 35-year service awards at the celebrations.

Plant Manager Nigel Blair spoke at the event, highlighting the plant’s achievements in efficiency, health and safety and reducing the plant’s environmental impact. To this latter point, Mr Blair spoke of the recent agreement between Lafarge Tarmac and RSPB Scotland over the transformation of a former quarry into a leisure and nature facility. “We are delighted that one of the jewels in our crown in the future will be the legacy of the former north-west quarry. The management agreement we have recently entered into with RSPB Scotland will be critical in delivering a facility we can all be proud of, of pivotal importance to wildlife and the community,” Mr Blair said.

“The Dunbar site remains a key part of our business as the only cement plant in the whole of Scotland.  All those who have worked at the plant over the years are part of its considerable success story,” added Charles Law, Managing Director of Lafarge Tarmac’s cement and lime business in the UK.
