Quarry Life Award celebrates winning projects in the UK, Germany and Australia

As participants gear up for the announcement of the winners of the International Quarry Life Award on 9 December, HeidelbergCement has revealed more winning projects for the national element of the award.

United Kingdom

  • 1st place (€5000): Anglia Ruskin University – Grassland insects after gravel extraction.
  • 2nd place (€3000): Bath Spa University – Feasibility of biodiversity enhancements in woodland ground flora.
  • 3rd place (€1500): Loughborough University and University College London – Life in new lakes at Barton Quarry (II).
  • Highly commended project: University of the West of England – The value of quarry restoration to ecological networks.

Germany

  • 1st place (€5000): Dr Thomas Trabold from the biotope protection association Heidelberger Biotopschutz e.V – Biotope networking of three former quarries in Leimen, Heidelberg-Rohrbach and farmers’ quarry Emmertsgrundweg.
  • 2nd place (€3000): Jürgen Reusch in cooperation with 7th grade students of Jessen grammar school – Design and further development of suitable spawning grounds for the protection of native amphibians.
  • 3rd place (€1500): Stefanie Heyder, Manuela Lang and Christina Astner, students at the Chair for Ecological Restoration at TU München – Metamorphosis of a stone quarry: a project for reintroducing rare butterflies to the Walhalla Kalk quarry in Regensburg.

Australia

  • 1st place (€5000): Christopher Stuart Jones – Riparian vegetation condition assessment and management proposal.
  • 2nd place (€3000): Kate Stevenson – Amphibian colonisation of the artificial water body Tweed Sands Lake.
  • 3rd place (€1500): Sophie Malkin – Community engagement framework.
