Cam Pha plant exports first clinker

World Cement,

According to reports, the first shipment of clinker left Cam Pha Cement Joint Stock Company on 30 June, bound for the Middle East. The shipment was made up of some 15 000 t of clinker and was shipped from Quang Ninh province in the north of the country.

This is a relatively new development for the Vietnamese cement industry, which used to be an import-based market. In recent years, however, there has been a massive drive towards increasing capacity, which has left the country facing an overcapacity situation (as reported in the April issue of WORLD CEMENT and in Paul Maxwell-Cook’s Regional Insight). Earlier this year, Vicem announced that it would be trying to increase exports to 1 million t this year in a bid to avoid harsh competition on the domestic market.

Hoang Anh Tuan, General Director of the company, told press that the Cam Pha plant will continue to trade with Africa and the Middle East, as well as with more local markets, such as Cambodia and Laos.

“We hope this will contribute to establishing our trademark more firmly in domestic and foreign markets,” he said.
