World Cement,
Lafarge India recently participated in the WBCSD’s Energy Efficiency in Buildings (EEB) 2.0 Laboratory in Jaipur. The company is an active member of the EEB 2.0 Laboratory technical committee, which works across the construction chain to trigger market transformation and drive energy efficiency in buildings.
The two-day lab sessions focussed on understanding the barriers to adopting energy efficiency and how these could be overcome. Discussions revolved around creating awareness of the benefits of energy efficient buildings, the financial mechanisms available to promote such projects, techniques to boost the adoption of energy efficiency and policies to maintain competitiveness and increase transparency and market activity.
"Climate change is a defining challenge for the 21st century and the construction sector as a whole,” said Gautam Eunny, Head-Construction Development Laboratory Lafarge India. “From the Indian real estate and construction standpoint, energy efficiency in buildings is integral to sustainable development and has a significant impact on energy demand in India. Lafarge India is committed to make strong market level interventions through collaborative platforms like the EEB 2.0 labs involving stakeholders in the construction eco-system to trigger local level actions towards energy efficiency."
"Every year thousands of new buildings are built without any concern for energy efficiency. The market alone will not be able to make the necessary changes,” said Roland Hunziker, Director, EEB Project, WBCSD. “Most building owners and occupants are not aware enough about the various ramifications of indiscriminate energy consumption. Inertia is reinforced by assumptions that costs are too high and savings too low. The need of the hour is a major, coordinated global effort with local interventions and actions. If we can create that, we will conserve energy, cut greenhouse gas emissions and stimulate economic growth at the same time."
