Zuari Cement launches skills development programme for local communities
India’s Zuari Cement, part of the Italcementi Group, has launched a new initiative to help young people in the communities around its facilities to develop new skills that will enable them to become self employed.
The first phase of the project, which is known as ‘Prazna’, will involve 40 young men and women from villages near to Zuari Cement’s Sitapuram cement plant. Training programmes will help participants to gain skills in: tailoring and sewing; motor winding and maintenance; consumer appliance repairs; computer skills.
A launch event was held on 27 August for the tailoring and sewing training initiative. This was attended by village leaders, Zuari Cement management and employees.
The programme is in line with the cement manufacturer’s corporate social responsibility aims, and will be implemented in other communities where the company operates.
Zuari Cement has a production capacity of 6 million t. In addition to the plant in Sitapuram, it operates a cement plant in Yerraguntla and a grinding facility in Chennai. It is currently establishing a 3 million tpa plant in North Karnataka, a grinding unit in Sholapur, Maharashtra, and a cement terminal in Kochi, Kerala.
