A 33 m high dome is under construction for Holcim New Zealand at PrimePort in Timaru. The company is investing NZ$100 million in building new storage facilities in Timaru and Auckland as part of its new business strategy for the country. The dome will have a capacity for 30 000 t of material. The dome, supplied by American company DOMTEC, was inflated in about an hour and over the next few months an insulation layer and a reinforced concrete layer will be added. The inflated layer is a waterproof membrane made of a fabric called DomeSkin.

New Zealand Country Manager Glenda Harvey said that the dome is the first of its kind in New Zealand. “The stage today involved putting up the dome, creating the shape for the polyurethane and concrete shells to be added from the inside. The innovation and technology being used is world class and is another example of the benefits Holcim New Zealand gains from the global Holcim family of companies.”

“The company globally invests millions in research and development and sourcing high quality product along with managing transportation and logistics for customers. This reduces risk to customers as Holcim can tap into a wide network to source cement and most importantly make sure it gets to where it needs to when it is needed.”

“This is critically important to the construction and infrastructure sectors, particularly with the huge demand post-earthquake in Christchurch.”

Holcim announced last year that it would be ceasing production of cement in New Zealand and instead investing in import terminals to supply demand.
