A low-carbon technology roadmap for India’s cement industry has been launched
A low-carbon technology roadmap for the Indian cement industry has been launched in response to the sector’s need to cut its carbon footprint whilst meeting the growing demand for building materials in the country. It follows the launch of the global cement technology roadmap published in 2009.
The India-specific roadmap aims to reduce the industry’s carbon emissions by 45% by 2050, through measures such as higher clinker substitution, alternative fuels, enhancing energy efficiency and investing in newer technologies. The country’s cement industry developed the plan in collaboration with the International Energy Agency, the Confederation of Indian Industry Green Business Centre and the National Council for Cement and Building Materials. In addition, the IFC is to help CSI member companies in India to carry out a resource efficiency assessment to examine the feasibility of implementing new technologies that could help them to reduce their carbon footprint.
Speaking at the launch, Philippe Fonta, WBCSD CSI Managing Director, said: “CSI member companies in India are able, thanks to IFC support, to scale-up the implementation of low-carbon solutions in their own plants and across the cement industry more broadly. This will help ensure that leading companies in the CSI can continue to provide the growing volumes of cement required from the Indian market, and do this in a low-carbon and energy efficient manner.”
