Lafarge Philippines inaugurates RDF facility and opens training centre

Lafarge’s Cement School

Lafarge Republic Inc.’s (LRI) Teresa cement plant in the Philippines has opened the LRI Teresa Cement School. The school will deliver courses to Lafarge employees through the country, providing them with the opportunity to develop their operational, technical and leadership skills. Lectures will cover topics such as production process and maintenance training, while the school’s workshop facilities will enable plant employees to gain practical experience with machine prototypes. The school has plans to expand its course content in the future, eventually offering management training in addition to technical knowledge.

“Through the Cement School, we hope to create a uniquely participative and supportive environment where information on the best practices and knowledge on plant processes are widely available and openly shared. By developing their talents and potentials through training programmes and on-the job coaching, Lafarge hopes to strengthen continuous performance improvement for our employees, while creating value through growth,” said Lafarge Republic, Inc. President Renato Sunico.

Refuse-derived fuel

The Teresa plant also announced the inauguration of its refuse-derived fuel (RDF) facility, which will convert municipal solid waste into energy. RDF facilities at LRI’s Teresa, Bulacan and Noragaray cement plants are expected to help the Payatas landfill site to reduce municipal solid waste by around 30%.

“We see this facility as a clear manifestation of our efforts to be a responsible company and meet the challenges of society, as well as play an active role in the development of the communities where we operate,” stated Lafarge Holdings (Philippines) Inc. President Don Lee.

The Teresa plant also operates a heat recovery system, which has enabled it to cut its CO2 emissions by 12 000 tpa and lower its dependence on the Luzon energy grid by 30%.

Reforestation

Lafarge is an active member of the Philippine’s National Greening Program, which aims to plant 1.5 billion trees across 1.5 million hectares by 2016. Lafarge plans to carry out reforestation work across 850 hectares this year. The cement manufacturer will be responsible for maintenance of the area and newly planted trees until 2016.
