Holcim named amongst greenest companies in Indonesian assessment

World Cement,

Switzerland’s Holcim has received the top rating in an environmental assessment of companies by the Indonesia Environment Ministry. Indonesia’s annual colour-coded assessment names and shames those companies that do not comply with emissions regulations, and rewards those that do.

The only operations to receive the ‘gold’ rating were Holcim’s plant in Cilacap, in Central Java, and Chevron Geothermal Indonesia’s Darajat plant in Garut, West Java. The gold rating is awarded to companies who demonstrate the highest level of compliance to emissions regulations and show a sense of responsibility to their communities. Gold is followed by green and blue, which indicate compliance to the ministry’s effort to reduce, reuse and recycle or are deemed moderately environmentally friendly, respectively. Red ratings show a lack of compliance, while a black rating is given to companies that knowingly and deliberately pollute the environment. In this year’s assessment, 54 companies received green and 435 blue. A further 152 companies were ranked red, with 47 earning a black rating.

Companies that receive a gold or green rating are eligible for tax relief and greater access to loans. Indonesia’s Environment Minister, Gusti Muhammad Hatta, explained the other consequences of the ratings system: “Companies put under the red category will be denied access to credit. Companies put under the black category for the second consecutive time will be brought to justice.”
