Coal ash for Philippine cement plants

World Cement,

CEDC has just completed the initial firing of boiler number one of the three 82 MW coal-fired power plants built by the Metrobank Group-led consortium in Toledo City.

Cebu Business reports that CEDC President and Global Business Power Corporation president Jesus Alcordo said that the initial firing of the first boiler is a milestone in the group’s plans of building the three 82 MW clean coal fired plants. He said that with a negative energy supply last year and reaching a critical limit it was hoped that a solution had been found with these three new coal-fired plants. Being The second boiler will be launched in May and the third by December. The project should provide added power to Cebu and still have 32 MW of reserve supply.

At the same time Alcordo said that negotiations regarding the sale of coal ash to cement companies were still ongoing. The first power plant in Toledo is expected to produce about 300 tpd of ash and the one at Iloilo 200 tpd. While talks mostly involve cement manufacturers in Cebu some traders are interested. Alcordo said that this development answers the question as to where the coal ash would be safely deposited as this had been the subject of debate, mostly led by environmentalists. He added that companies and individuals would both benefit, as there would be more chances of jobs being created through the production of clean coal and increased production for the cement companies.
