Mini cement plant in Nagaland to be revived

The mini cement plant at Wazeho, Phek is set to be revived in a proposition by the state government of Manipur, which borders Myanmar. The plant would be located in Pungro subdivision in Kiphire district and would cater to both domestic and foreign demand, being ideally positioned for export into Southeast Asia. The region has limestone deposits of 10 000 million t, according to Nagaland State Mineral Development Corporation.

The plant was abandoned five years ago after it was upgraded to a modern, 150 tpd plant due to a lack of financing. The state is now determined that the plant should be a success, producing quality cement and contributing to the state’s revenues. Once it has been revived (via funding from the state exchequer), the plant will be privatised.

With such vast mineral supplies, the NSMDC is hopeful that tapping these resources could help Nagaland to become a self-sufficient state. A road map is being prepared to ship materials at the nearest port in Tamanthi international border, in order to export to Southeast Asia. Additionally, there is the opportunity to transport cement by road into Myanmar via the Avungkhu international border trade centre.
