At the end of 2013, the Cement and Concrete Association of New Zealand (CCANZ) announced that Dene Cook had been appointed as CCANZ Chair. Cook is a representative of the New Zealand Portland Cement Association and Technical Manager at Fletcher Building. His experience also includes former CCANZ Project Manager and Technical Manager at Firth Industries.

In the December 2013 issue of the NZRMCA Newsletter, CCANZ reported the launch of its new skills maintenance website. The website is aimed at both industry and early career professionals. It is expected to help lab managers ensure that their team’s skills are kept up-to-date. The first course comprises eight videos focusing on fresh and hardened concrete testing. Further courses are currently being developed.

New Zealand concrete production statistics

Rebuilding work carried out in Christchurch as part of the earthquake recovery initiative helped to boost ready-mix concrete volumes, with output rising by 28.3% y/y in 2013. In 4Q13, production levels grew by 27.7% y/y in the region. Cement output in Auckland was also higher than the previous year, with volumes up 16.4% y/y for the full-year and up 14% y/y in 4Q13. Ready-mix concrete production increased by 15% y/y in Wellington in 2013.
